What is Viral Marketing?

The idea behind viral marketing is to get people to pass on your message from person to person, similar to a viral infection, which passes among the population, eventually leading to an epidemic. Viral marketing can be done in many ways and email was the probably the first way that it was used by internet businesses, but since then other techniques have been developed that encourage people to pass information about products, services and internet sites to their friends and relatives.

Many Internet businesses are now using the increasing popularity of viral marketing and achieving unprecedented success, especially small ones that are just starting up. But it must be taken into account that it can be detrimental to those same businesses. You can, of course, use viral marketing but you can’t force the viral thing to happen and similarly you cannot compel a product or service to go viral.

If it is good enough it will happen, but adversely if it’s a poor product it can also go viral but with the opposite effect. People love to share good things with their friends and families, but they will be just as quick to share an unpleasant incidence or the name of the company they think has delivered a poor deal. It has been said that a person will tell two people about a good product, but eleven people about an inferior product or experience.

When considering whether to use the power of viral marketing one thing you should remember is that it has been used successfully by many of the top Internet marketers and in fact in many cases has been the reason for their success. You should always be looking to use everything at hand to market your product or idea and without doubt, viral marketing can help you reap the benefits of reaching more than just your target audience and stretching those advertising expenses as far as they will go. It is important to realise, however that it is just one strategy, but one that does work extremely efficiently toward achieving your campaign objectives.

A word of caution though is that you can create an incredible offer and a terrific message, and follow all the rules of viral marketing, but if a consumer visits your site and is not impressed or you fail to deliver what you promised, you will certainly achieve viral marketing, but the wrong kind.
